The Dance Complex has been named a top nonprofit by the 2010 Art Appreciation Campaign, founder Rozann Kraus said Tuesday.

“Though there is no monetary reward with this recognition, the increased visibility and credibility it affords is substantial,” Kraus said. The selection provides the volunteer-based center with a closer link to philanthropic groups and individuals.

The campaign, hosted by GreatNonprofits, Guidestar and Intersection for the Arts, has chosen 192 organizations for the designation from across the country; there are nine in Greater Boston and others throughout Massachusetts, including Lenox’s Shakespeare & Co. and VSA Arts of Massachusetts Inc., of Boston.

The Dance Complex is a 19-year-old organization in Central Square with a diverse offering of classes, rehearsal and performance facilities — the only nonmembership organization in the area offering ongoing, drop-in classes for all ages, skills and interest levels, she said. It is based in, and “the proud steward of,” the Odd Fellows Hall, which was recently renovated to make the Julie Ince Thompson Theatre, lobby and offices are fully accessible.

The Dance Complex is at 536 Massachusetts Ave. For information, call (617) 547-9363 or click here.
