A 22-year-old man was shot in the back of the neck at about 2 a.m. Friday at Bishop Allen Drive and Columbia Street, near Central Square, police said.

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors told Cambridge Police the bullet hadnโ€™t hit the spinal column or other vital parts. It appears the victim will come out of surgery well, said Dan Riviello, the police departmentโ€™s communications specialist.

The shooter isnโ€™t known, Riviello said, but police do not believe the shooting was random and already have โ€œseveral solid leads.โ€

Anyone with information about the assault is asked to call the Cambridge Police Detective Bureau at (617) 349-3370 or the departmentโ€™s front desk, 24 hours a day, at (617) 349-3301.
