From the American Red Cross of Massachusetts, Sept. 14: The American Red Cross of Massachusetts is looking for a few good runners – 60 to be exact.

Team Red Cross assists team members from start to finish in competing in one of the world’s premiere sporting events, all while lending assistance to the residents of Massachusetts when they are at their most vulnerable. Members of Team Red Cross train together over the winter months, making long weekend runs easier. Team Red Cross has partnered with Coach Dan Fitzgerald and Heartbreak Hill Running Co. for several years, providing expert training and guidance for runners.

Last year’s team captain, Karen Teller, said while the training is difficult over the winter, the camaraderie and friendships make the training positive and fulfilling. “Last year was a very difficult training period. Record snowfall forced us as a team to find creative ways to get miles in and prepared for April,” Teller said.

Since 2012, Team Red Cross has raised nearly $1 million to support disaster relief operation in Massachusetts.

“Not only does the Red Cross provide critical assistance to disaster victims, but it also has the ability to open our eyes. It is important to raise awareness to the many issues our world faces on a daily basis. It is my duty, as a supporter of the Red Cross, to help create that awareness and raise the funding needed,” said Nikki DiGuilio, a member of Team Red Cross.

The 120th running of the Boston Marathon is April 18. The American Red Cross is an official charity partner of the B.A.A. Boston Marathon.
