A shooting at approximately 7:30 tonight sent one victim to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston with a wound to the abdomen, and brought police to the scene at Tremont and Hampshire streets investigating, said Jeremy Warnick, director of communications and media relations for Cambridge police, in an email. The intersection is in a mostly residential area near Inman Square in Mid-Cambridge.

The victim, a man in his 20s, died, police said.

Update on Nov. 18, 2017: The victim has been identified as Malachi Mims, 28, authorities said.

Early scanner reports indicated two people fled the scene from a car that had been parked nearby on Norfolk Street – possibly a man and a woman.

Police shut down street traffic for at least three hours while they investigated, but Hampshire Street was open to traffic again by 11:30 p.m. The investigation is now being pursued by the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, Massachusetts State Police and Cambridge Police.

There were multiple calls to police reporting the shooting; as many as three shots were heard, according to at least one caller.

It’s the first shooting since early Oct. 14, when two men were killed – one in Cambridge and one in Somerville, in incidents that took place less than 10 minutes apart. As in those shootings, police suspected that the Thursday incident was targeted, and that other residents were not in danger from the shooters.
