Harvard Square changes; Brick factory to be razed

Historical Commission, 6 p.m. Thursday. There’s a slew of spruce-ups and some bigger changes proposed for around Harvard Square. Among the bigger items: More than a year after news The Smoke Shop BBQ would open a location in the empty, two-story Sandrine’s Bistro/En Boca space at 8 Holyoke St., empty since June 2017, things are looking serious – restaurant owners are asking permission for an illuminated sign; The Red House, 98 Winthrop St., seeks to enclose its patio, which would more than double the small number of wintertime patrons allowed under social distancing rules; and the Harvard Coop at 1400 Massachusetts Ave. wants to enclose its entryway vestibule in glass, which would either lock out the homeless people who sleep there or keep them warmer. Also, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is taking action on demolishing the mostly one-story 1883 brick factory at 624 Main St., near Kendall Square in The Port, for a lab building with retail and restaurants at its base. The plan has been in the school’s town-gown reports dating back to at least 2013. Watchable by Zoom video conferencing.
