Scary Sweets: EHChocolatier

Halloween’s in the air, but the coronavirus pandemic makes trick-or-treating a spooky prospect. (The city has canceled all street party permits, while the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has tagged door-to-door activities as high risk. Gov. Charlie Baker, concerned about activities moving indoors to confined spaces, has deferred to individual communities.) There’s at least one glorious alternative to the traditional way of garnering a little one’s holiday sweets – granted, it’s not the same, but will taste better than commercial milk chocolate fare and is healthier: Boo Bags from EHChocolatier. Each $25 festively adorned bag (green monster, black cat or orange pumpkin) is filled with an assortment of handcrafted confectionary goodness including a milk chocolate owl, chocolate bats, a ghost shortbread cookie, the store’s bestselling caramelized peanut butter cups (these you must try) and apple cider caramels.

The chocolate venture, started 10 years ago by Elaine Hsieh and Catharine Sweeney, has been in its cozy boutique storefront on Huron Avenue just over a year and a half after running popup ventures out of a factory facility in Somerville. The store’s specialty is decorative bonbons and artisanal candy bars, all made with 100 percent natural ingredients – nothing artificial, that’s their covenant. All things considered, the business is bustling, so much so that if you place an online order for pickup (you can ship anywhere as well) it can take up to three days to fill because of high demand and the delicate process of care loving craft. In-store pickup allows one customer inside at a time.

And for the record, the Boo Bag was not for me, but my sweets-hawking daughter.
