Green Cambridge and the Cambridge Residents Alliance plan a Zoom community discussion of options for a Tree Protection Ordinance at 7 p.m. Tuesday and invite participants in a focused discussion on options for a new law to register here.

For the past year, there has been a temporary moratorium in place on cutting larger trees meant to stem a “serious decline in the tree canopy of our shared urban forest,” and the City Council is working on revising a permanent law, organizers of the event said. The council’s Health and Education Committee held hearings Oct. 13 and Nov. 10, when a slide presentation (click here for a download) showed some of options for the ordinance.

The decline in tree canopy was documented in the Urban Forest Master Plan Technical Report in 2019 and a follow-on release called “Healthy  Forest, Healthy City,” organizers said.
