Police were searching Thursday for a man they say showed a gun to demand money from a nail salon and carjacked a vehicle to escape.

“There are multiple crime scenes – one in Cambridge and at least two in Somerville,” said Jeremy Warnick, director of communications and media relations for Cambridge police.

The incident took place in the area around Gore Park in East Cambridge near the Somerville line, police said, and the search included Somerville and state police.

Police have released this image of the man they’re seeking as a suspect in a Thursday commercial armed robbery and carjacking.

The suspect reportedly demanded money from an employee at 389 Cambridge St., the home of Super Nails. Police said the man “carjacked and fled in a vehicle,” which was found abandoned in Somerville near the railroad tracks off McGrath Highway near Sav-Mor Liquors, where the man fled on foot. Preliminary information indicates a woman was carjacked at gunpoint behind the Somerville McDonald’s at Twin City Plaza. There are no known physical injuries, Warnick said.

Authorities described the man they seek as white with a scruffy beard and dirty blond hair. He is approximately 5-foot-8 and stocky, police said.
