In many communities, going to a high school arts production means hours of cringing through an awkward obligation. In Cambridge, what CRLS students do on stage are hot tickets – accomplished and sophisticated works that put some professional companies to shame – and none are so hot as the biannual Dance/Works shows.
The winter show, held at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, features around 40 dancers performing in a dozen pieces featuring a range of styles, from hip-hop to postmodern to West African. Dancers described their pieces as “scary,” “hopeful,” “activist” and “edgy,” the result of unique creative processes in which student choreographers worked with guest artists and local choreographers Sara Sweet Rabidoux, Joh Camara and Marya Wegman, publicists said.
They also had a strong base from which to jeté: The school’s own Modern Dance Co., directed by Brenda Divelbliss, and an Advanced Dance class taught by Lauren Simpson.
The shows are at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday at The Fitzgerald Theatre at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, 459 Broadway. There is a $5 donation for tickets available at the door.
