You’re missing out if you don’t look around or up near the old Guaranty Trust Building across from City Hall in Central Square. Not only is it a beautiful building, continuing City Hall’s Richardson Romanesque tone and complemented by elaborate stone etching at its pillars and bay windows; it includes a little bonus in the form of a smoking gargoyle — a delightfully skeptical-looking one clenching an impromptu stogie. How long ago was this addition made? How long will it last? At least as long as the city permits smoking at all, probably.

And what is it smoking, anyway? Could it be … stoned?
