082113i-Jefferson-R.-SmithFrom the Jefferson R. Smith campaign, Aug. 21: The campaign of Jefferson R. Smith for City Council announced it has received the endorsement of the Sierra Club of Massachusetts, the nation’s oldest grassroots environmental organization.

“I’m humbled and honored to the endorsement that reflects the trust the Sierra Club of Massachusetts has placed in my candidacy to represent the residents of Cambridge on our City Council,” Smith said, referring to the club’s “40-year legacy of protecting the environment with successful legislative, advocacy and educational campaigns in the Bay State.”

“I am in this race because I believe in the power that exceptional public service can bring to Cambridge, and I am looking forward to talking with the city’s voters about how my energy and experience can help the city improve housing options for all of its residents,” he said.

Recognizing the importance of economic growth, coupled with the effects that new development can bring to cities and towns, Smith has been a strong advocate for a balanced approach to development in the city that will maintain Cambridge’s leadership role in recycling, greenhouse emissions reduction and green economy innovation.

As vice president of MassRecycle, a statewide 501(c) nonprofit coalition in all 351 municipalities, Smith has worked to advance environmental policies such as solid waste reduction and the Updated Bottle Bill.
