082113i-Jefferson-R.-SmithFrom the Jefferson R. Smith campaign, Aug. 21: The campaign of Jefferson R. Smith for City Council announced it has received the endorsement of the Sierra Club of Massachusetts, the nation’s oldest grassroots environmental organization.

โ€œIโ€™m humbled and honored to the endorsement that reflects the trust the Sierra Club of Massachusetts has placed in my candidacy to represent the residents of Cambridge on our City Council,โ€ Smith said, referring to the clubโ€™s โ€œ40-year legacy of protecting the environment with successful legislative, advocacy and educational campaigns in the Bay State.โ€

โ€œI am in this race because I believe in the power that exceptional public service can bring to Cambridge, and I am looking forward to talking with the cityโ€™s voters about how my energy and experience can help the city improve housing options for all of its residents,โ€ he said.

Recognizing the importance of economic growth, coupled with the effects that new development can bring to cities and towns, Smith has been a strong advocate for a balanced approach to development in the city that will maintain Cambridgeโ€™s leadership role in recycling, greenhouse emissions reduction and green economy innovation.

As vice president of MassRecycle, a statewide 501(c) nonprofit coalition in all 351 municipalities, Smith has worked to advance environmental policies such as solid waste reduction and the Updated Bottle Bill.
