ย (A Poemโ€ฆfor Ourโ€ฆโ€˜AGASSIZโ€ฆNEIGHBORHOODโ€™) โ€˜GREAT’…NeedN’T Mean…โ€˜PERFECTโ€™!ย

Two hundredโ€ฆor so…years ago
Ideas THENโ€ฆwere NOT the same!
(NOT like TODAY’Sโ€ฆโ€˜Correctness Reignโ€™!)ย

Then: Few believed inโ€ฆEVOLUTION…
Charles Darwinโ€™s veryโ€ฆsmart solution!
Back then: AGASSIZ..wasโ€ฆโ€˜all the rageโ€™!
Plants, Birds, Animals: NOT justโ€ฆin some cageโ€ฆ
but STUFFED! Well-preserved, forโ€ฆALL now to see
closely, in comfort andโ€ฆSecurity!ย

He thought that Blacks were…NOT his kin!
[But that meant thatโ€ฆjust Whites would WIN!]
Today, we know: โ€œThatโ€™sโ€ฆHORRIDโ€ฆHERESY!โ€
So why are there someโ€ฆwhoโ€™d much rather be
HONORINGโ€ฆthis manโ€ฆ(for sureโ€ฆUNpure)?
WHY SHOULDโ€ฆAgassizโ€™sโ€ฆNAME nowโ€ฆendure?ย

โ€˜Cause being flawedโ€ฆdoesNโ€™Tโ€ฆhave to meanโ€ฆโ€˜Failed!โ€™
HIS Tasks, to HELP us out….SHALL long beโ€ฆHAILED!
Courageโ€ฆHard-workโ€ฆDiscipline:โ€ฆThey WERE ALL HIS!
[Watch many students PASS hisโ€ฆsuper-tough quiz!]ย

HE WONโ€ฆfor us… the firstโ€ฆGRADUATE Schools!
Helped found CORNELL, aboveโ€ฆCayugaโ€™s pools!
Though Agassiz made.โ€ฆONE HUGE mistakeโ€ฆ
That doesN’T mean HEโ€ฆwasN’T First-Rate!ย

โ€œLet One WITHOUT SIN nowโ€ฆcast the first stone!โ€
Let’s RESCUE him, NOW! DON’Tโ€ฆLEAVE him alone!
For ONLY GOD can beโ€ฆHis Righteous Judge!
[Note:โ€ฆGODโ€™sโ€ฆNOT the type to…hold a LONG Grudge!]ย

Attack NOT His CORPSEโ€ฆas do…loathsomeโ€ฆVULTURE!
SUPPORTโ€ฆ(DON’T CANCEL)โ€ฆOUR AGASSIZ’sโ€ฆCULTUREโ€™!ย

  1. It was bad enough when Mr Meyer tried to rationalize Agassizโ€™s racism in his last letter, but this work of โ€œpoetryโ€ is a new low. Using wordplay or the cute rhymes of a child does not obscure that Agassiz was a deeply destructive racist who used his power and position to oppress Black people and lay the pseudo-intellectual foundation for many others to do the same.

Meyer says ideas may have have been different hundreds of years ago, as if somehow Agassiz was simply a casual bystander. On the contrary, Agassiz was an exceptionally active and energetic proponent of these abhorrent ideas.

As a community that prides itself on the intellect and progress, it is repugnant that we continue to honor a backward anti-intellectual who did so much damage to so many.
