The current heat emergency should not be casually dismissed as an anomalous period of high temperatures, but as an ominous harbinger of the new normal.  Extreme weather events once described as “century storms” are now alarmingly frequent, and everywhere on Earth societies are struggling to cope.

Make no mistake: this is what climate change looks like as it unfolds in real time.  And it’s not only our physical infrastructure that’s crumbling in the face of storms, floods, fires, and excessive heat, but our agriculture, public health, and community resilience as well.

A decade ago there were educated people who managed to support an intellectual framework for climate-change denial, but these days the metastasizing greenhouse effect and its consequences in our daily lives have made such self-deception well-nigh impossible.  The only denialists left are the well and truly fooled — and those who profit from fooling them.
