As highschoolers, we are often fed empty promises from leaders regarding climate change. Overworked phrases noting “commitment to the youth and their future” feel lackluster and unfulfilling. When policy making comes into play, these promises boil down to words instead of actions.
I am supporting senatorial candidate Ed Markey because he delivers. Senator Markey has co-written some of the most critical climate legislation of our time, such as the Green New Deal. After bringing his promises to life in legislation, he has continued to fight for them, defending against attacks in Washington.
Senator Markey’s environmental policies sit at the intersection between social and environmental progress, putting people first while working towards a productive, greener future. One example of this is the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, the largest climate investment in U.S. history. This legislation accelerated clean-energy development, including $3 billion for climate justice programs. The IRA also included expanded tax credits for renewable energy, including offshore wind, and provided additional incentives for domestic manufacturing.
Senator Markey has worked to broaden the impact of climate initiatives to serve public schools and healthcare programs, critical institutions for many, myself included. The American people lie at the heart of Senator Markey’s environmental policy with his dedication to furthering our futures and increasing energy affordability for families.
Seth Moulton’s categorization of climate change as a threat to national and economic security rings that same repetitive tune of flimsy promises with little implementation. Moulton’s rhetoric noting the need for someone new is not only irrelevant, but it tells me nothing about how he will fight for climate investment in Washington. I know I can trust Senator Markey to deliver on promises, which is why I urge my fellow young voters to vote for him on September 1st.
