Cambridge Police Department issued a statement shortly before noon that an individual who had “brandished an edged weapon at a coffee shop in Harvard Square” has been arrested. The person will be charged with Assault by Means and Disorderly Conduct.
Police said the incident occurred at 8:47 a.m. The Harvard Police Department had issued an emergency alert about an incident that occurred near 124 Mount Auburn Street, and asking people in the vicinity to shelter in place. That alert has been lifted.
Harvard police had initially said the individual had wielded a knife or a machete and was being sought after an aggravated assault and battery. Its emergency alert said Harvard officers along with Cambridge Police and Massachusetts State Police were searching the area for the individual.
Tuesday is the primary election day. There are no polling places in the vicinity.
