The new Kendall Square Advisory Committee needs volunteers to help advise city staff and consultants on developing roadway, sidewalk, lighting, open space and urban design improvements, said Ini Tomeu, the cityโ€™s public information office.ย Residents, workers, business owners and students who know Kendall Square well are encouraged to apply.

Letters of interest are due by Nov. 19. City Manager Robert W. Healy Jr will decide the committeeโ€™s membership.

The committee is expected to meet every other month over the next nine to 12 months to develop a master plan for the area, as well as detailed plans for Main Street between Broadway and Ames Street. That stretch is expected to be fully rebuilt over the next couple of years, and the committee will be expected to review how pedestrians, bicyclists, drivers and T and bus riders use the area and interact. Transportation facilities, surface materials, lighting, tree plantings and green spaces will all be addressed, Tomeu said.

Letters of interest should be sent to project manager Katherine Watkins at the Department of Public Works, 147 Hampshire St., Cambridge MA 02139 or by e-mail to kwatkins@cambridgema.gov. For information, call (617) 349-4751.

  1. The proof of this pudding will be in the people named to the committee. Will the usual unstated criterion of abject Healy-worship (or at least no known Healy criticism) for city boards and committees apply or not? This committee could actually do some good if it really represents the community, and I would love for my reflexive cynicism over nearly everything Cambridge does to be proven wrong, wrong, wrong, for just this once.
