Riverbend Park – created by closing parts of Memorial Drive to cars for use by people on foot and bicycle – will be open from 10 a.m. Thursday through 7 a.m. Monday, weather permitting, the state Department of Conservation and Recreation said Tuesday. Usually the “park” is a summertime weekend thing, but city councillors have called for more use of it during the coronavirus lockdown’s demand for more socially distant exercise space.

The Saturday and Sunday traffic closings had been set to expire Nov. 22, but a series of orders from councillors have asked for continued extensions, which have been doled out piecemeal.

The latest, heard Monday, asked to keep Memorial Drive open as “Riverbend Park” beyond Sunday. The announcement from the state so far just adds two days onto Riverbend Park use ahead of the weekend.
