Swearing-in for City Council …

City Council inaugural meeting, 10 a.m. Monday. This start-of-the-term ceremony swears in councillors and lets them begin choosing a mayor and vice mayor from within their ranks. Like two years ago, the longest-serving member of the council, E. Denise Simmons, is in charge until Mayor Sumbul Siddiqui is either reelected or replaced. Unlike two years ago, when Covid concerns left this event outdoors at Starlight Square, the council meets at City Hall, 795 Massachusetts Ave., Central Square. Televised and watchable by Zoom videoconferencing.

… and School Committee members

Special meeting of the School Committee, 4 p.m. Monday. As with the council’s first meeting of the term, committee members will be sworn in and hold an “organizational meeting” to elect a vice chair, who leads in the absence of the mayor; appoint subcommittees and their own chairs; and adopt rules of procedure. If a mayor isn’t elected earlier in the day, senior city councillor E. Denise Simmons sits in. The committee meets in the auditorium of the King Open School, 850 Cambridge St., Wellington-Harrington. Televised and watchable by Zoom videoconferencing.

Education hiring and retention

School Committee, 6 p.m. Tuesday. The new committee gets right to business, getting an update on recruiting, hiring and district employee retention, as well as improvements in and from Cambridge Public Schools human-resources practices. The committee meets in the Dr. Henrietta S. Attles Meeting Room at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, 459 Broadway, Mid-Cambridge. Televised and watchable by Zoom videoconferencing.

Preschool near Harvard Square

Historical Commission, 6 p.m. Thursday. In a continued hearing, Lubavitch of Cambridge asks for partial demolition of 38-40 Banks St. and relocation and partial demolition of 48 Banks St., homes in a residential Riverside neighborhood near Harvard Square where it has its Preschool of the Arts. Nearby is its day care at 65 Banks St. Watchable by Zoom videoconferencing.
