Department of Public Health

The Commissioner of Public Health for the City of Cambridge promulgated revisions to the โ€œCambridge Public Health Department Regulation for the Keeping of Honey Beesโ€ under the authority of M.G.L. c. 111 s.31. These revisions improve the clarity of language within the regulations, remove the requirement for a public hearing prior to permit approval for new applicants, and limit the restrictions regarding the transferability of permits. Applicants must apply for a beekeeping permit from the Cambridge Public Health Department prior to keeping honey bees. Permit applicants must detail lot structures and size, as well as all beekeeping structures and measurements taken to prevent pests. Permit holders and applicants are expected to work collaboratively with public health officials to enable site cleanliness, prevent harborage of pests, and ensure the wellbeing of permitted apiaries. Existing permits and permit holders will be honored. The changes reflected in these revisions shall be noted only in permit renewal applications that are submitted after the promulgation of this updated regulation.

For a copy of the regulation, contact the Cambridge Public Health Department at 617-665-3800 or support@cambridgepublichealth.zendesk.com or visit the departmentโ€™s website at www.cambridgepublichealth.org.
