Tree plantings, Somernova impact
Urban Forestry Committee, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday. A look at progress on projects including the removal of invasive species and the planting of trees across the city for the fall and private tree removal permits, and a check-in with the Pollinator Action Plan Advisory Committee, as well as updated plans for the Somernova rezoning process. Housing over Lyndell’s; lab plan
Planning Board, 6 p.m Thursday. The board hears developers hoping to continue work on a nine-story lab building next to McGrath Highway approved two years ago and from DiCamillo Associates on plans to build 30 apartments, including six affordable units, atop Lyndell’s Bakery, an iconic establishment at 720 Broadway, Ball Square. It also hears from representatives of Union Leaf, aptly a pot store at 71-72 Union Square, who are appealing a stipulation of the board – the need for the appointment-only business model forced upon all Somerville dispensaries in 2021.
Subsidizing new housing units
Housing and Community Development City Council Committee, 6 p.m. Thursday. Continuing a discussion started in January, the committee explores a proposal by city councilor Kristen Strezo to subsidize construction of affordable housing units. Under Strezo’s vision, the program would be modeled after an initiative in New York and provide homeowners and nonprofits up to $150,000 for development. Sarah Lewis, director of planning, preservation and zoning, has pushed back on the idea and said Strezo’s ideas brought up complications. Next City Council president
City Council caucus, 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. The council, currently led by Ben Ewen-Campen with Judy Pineda Neufeld, convenes to elect its president and vice president for 2025. At Somerville City Hall, 93 Highland Ave., Central Hill, and watchable through Zoom videoconferencing.
