While a 90-seat theater is on the way for Somerville’s Union Comedy, the organization isn’t waiting on its completion to start building the community that will fill its seats or stages. Underway now are weekly Jams designed to entice new performers to the art of improv. Supervising producer Emily Holland calls them a low-stakes introduction to the form and thinks going forth with a spirit of play is an ideal way to meet people at a time that can feel fraught or nerve-wracking. “They don’t need to commit to playing as soon as they walk in the door,” Holland says of participants. Not sure if you’re funny? Afraid you’ll do it wrong? “Nobody knows what they’re gonna do when they walk through that door,” she says. (Union, formed in 2017, expects to open soon 73 Bow St., Union Square, above a Fortissimo Coffeehouse and the Hot Tomatoes.)
The Jam at 5 p.m. April 13 at Union Comedy, 593 Somerville Ave., Spring Hill, Somerville. Free.
