Use of the Harvard Square kiosk
Cambridge kiosk advisory committee, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday. As a historical kiosk in Harvard Square prepares to open after a refurbishing from its former use as a newsstand, this group talks about what will be inside and how the space will be activated. Team members from CultureHouse and the Cambridge Office for Tourism present. In the Isaacson Room on the second floor of the Smith Campus Center, 1350 Massachusetts Ave., Harvard Square.
Memorial Day ceremony
Department of Veterans Services, at 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday. A celebration and commemoration of military members with mayor E. Denise Simmons, vice mayor Marc McGovern and city councillor Ayesha Wilson. The keynote speaker is LeVarr Brewster, an army veteran. The Cambridge Rindge and Latin School Marching Band, Monkeys with Crayons and Uncle Sam Jazz Band provide entertainment, with food and refreshments from Bouquet Appetite and Perfect Parties. Cambridge Department of Veteran Services director Cynthia Harris emcees at Cambridge Common, near Harvard Square.
Sex trafficking concerns
Human Services & Veterans Committee, 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday. This committee run by vice mayor Marc McGovern and councillor Ayesha Wilson looks at sex trafficking, resulting from concerns around news of sex workers set up in apartments by Alewife. The conversation will be “about the broader issue” of the crime of trafficking, McGovern made clear at an April 1 meeting, not politics. “This discussion will allow for stakeholders and other community members to raise awareness and share resources important to keeping individuals safe and free of harm,” organizers said. The committee meets at City Hall, 795 Massachusetts Ave., Central Square. Televised and watchable by Zoom videoconferencing.
Housing for the lower-income
Public comment drop-in session for HUD grants, 4 to 6 p.m. May 29. In preparing spending of federal funds for the coming years, Community Development Department staff ask public comments on affordable housing, economic development, public service and other community development needs for low and moderate-income residents. The funds to be used include general sources and one from a Housing Opportunities for Persons with Aids program. At City Hall Annex, 344 Broadway, Mid-Cambridge.
Affordable housing near Porter
Affordable Housing Overlay project community meeting, 6 to 7 p.m. May 29. This 100 percent affordable-housing proposal is for 2072 Massachusetts Ave., near Porter Square in North Cambridge, replacing the Darul Kabab restaurant next to senior homes. The potential height and number of units under a previous version could have provided as many as 49 affordable units, many of them intended for families. Developers Capstone Communities, Hope Real Estate Enterprises and MPZ Development discuss new plans and street and site context analysis at a meeting on the second floor of University Hall, 1815 Massachusetts Ave., Porter Square.
