Lieutenant governor Kim Driscoll joined students, educators, elected officials and community members Tuesday at Benjamin Banneker Charter Public School for its annual Steams Exposition, for science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics and social studies.

The Steams exposition, themed “Discovering the Wonders of Water,” showcased each grade level’s capstone projects throughout Banneker’s hallways and classrooms. In rooms decorated to create immersive experiences, students shared their learning about the role of water in varied ecosystems, including kelp forests, glaciers, coral reefs and wetlands. Additionally, students engaged visitors in interactive displays based on their investigations related to water pollution, water filtration and water’s critical role to life on Earth.

Driscoll toured exhibits alongside families and other guests and spoke with the kids.

“We have so many brilliant students in our state, and getting to see their projects at the Steams Expo was an incredible example of how the young people of Massachusetts are immersing themselves in the science of the world around them,” Driscoll said. “As a state, we are No. 1 for education, and that’s because our investments make schools, teachers and students stronger. This is how we support our next generation of leaders, and I’m glad I was able to visit Benjamin Banneker Charter Public School to meet those future leaders.”

Students created immersive experiences in school classrooms and hallways to share their learning about the role of water in varied ecosystems.

Also attending were state senator William Brownsberger, Cambridge city councillor Ayesha M. Wilson and staffers from the offices of representatives Steven Owens and Marjorie Decker, city councillor Cathie Zusy, the state departments of Conservation & Recreation and Environmental Protection, Green City Growers, Cambridge Public Schools, Somerville Public Schools and Tufts University.

“The Banneker Steams Expo is a powerful celebration of our students’ creativity, curiosity and innovation,” said Sherley Bretous, Banneker’s executive director. “We were honored to welcome lieutenant governor Kim Driscoll and so many other community leaders and partners to witness firsthand how our scholars think critically, solve problems and proudly share their learning. Our multifaceted Steams program reflects the brilliance of our students – and we couldn’t be prouder of the future they are building.”

The Banneker is a charter public school serving students in grades K1-6 from throughout Cambridge and beyond that has been recognized as a Blue Ribbon School by the US Department of Education.
