Every joke has to start somewhere. They may start in a comic’s Notes app or as scribblings in a dog-eared notebook. They start to grow legs in the dark rooms and unsteady stages of open mics. And they really take off running when tested in front of willing audiences such as The Rockwell is gathering for its New Material Comedy Night. At these nights hosted by rising local star Andrew Della Volpe, you’ll be a test audience for comedians refining jokes for upcoming gigs. Take it from a fellow comic: We need you there! Della Volpe says comics may take audience suggestions and try some experimental comedy (“also old jokes if the new ones do bad”). Where the night is a step up from the open mics found regularly at The Burren, Middle East, The Jungle and other clubs: No newcomers stepping up to see whether they have jokes at all.
New Material Comedy Night at 7 p.m. July 7 at The Rockwell, 255 Elm St., Davis Square, Somerville. Free.
