Meeting on Teele Square Pit

A public meeting is set for Aug. 25 about the vacant site – and election-season issue – at 1154-1164 Broadway called the Teele Square Pit. (It is an empty lot that was once a pit that was once a laundromat.) The meeting will allow public comment on plans submitted by site developers that include a 99-room boutique hotel backed by Hilton.

The meeting will be run by councilor at-large Kristen Strezo, who was assigned to the project after Ward 7 councilor Judy Pineda Neufeld stepped down from her position June 30. Michael Murray, a candidate for Ward 7 councilor who has made The Pit the focus of his campaign, advertised the meeting Thursday on social media: “Please show up so that the owner and the city can hear from the community about how we feel about having a giant dirt pit in the center of our square for 13 years, how we feel about the owner’s proposal, and what we would like to see.”

The meeting will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 25 via Zoom and at 167 Holland St., in the Tufts neighborhood near Teele Square.

Pineda joins viral bike path mayor discourse

Since a few Somervillians began posting political yard signs promoting their cats for bike path mayor last month, the race has ballooned to dozens of cat-idates.

Wilbert Pineda, candidate for Ward 7 councilor, weighed in this week. “Proud to be supporting a true community leader,” Pineda said in a Reddit post endorsing Berry, widely considered the incumbent bike path mayor.
