“Pointless musical ribbing” is the name of the game when Ryan Shea brings back his tuneful roast show “I Hate What You Love.” As the title implies, comics Danny Killea, Logan O’Brien and Tooky Kavanagh are in for a bit of debate (and perhaps a bit of defense) as they present their formative music videos for judgment a la “Mystery Science Theater 3000.” Shea renders a yes or no verdict and turns to the audience for confirmation or spirited disagreement What Shea loves most about this show is the way it reveals unexpected traits and opinions about performers’ carefully crafted stage personas. I never would have expected an admitted “hardcore/punk guy” such as Shea to pick “Hit Me Baby One More Time” by Britney Spears, but he did. The late-night hang invites votes for the coolness of his fellow comics and basks in a night of video-fueled nostalgia.
“I Hate What You Love with Ryan Shea” at 10 p.m. Oct. 2 at The Comedy Studio, 5 John F. Kennedy St., Harvard Square, Cambridge. $10.
