Repurposing house with hotel
Historical Commission, 6 to 10:30 p.m. Thursday. On the agenda is a developer plan to move the 1846 Harriet Jacobs house at 17 Story St. in Harvard Square to the corner of Story and Mount Auburn streets and restore it, a plan that won unanimous โapproval in principleโ on Sept 4 so it could continue toward development as a concept: to put up a building behind of up to 67 hotel rooms and roughly 50 residential units. The plan involves demolishing a neighborhood building at 129 Mount Auburn St. According to the proposal, the historic house will become the hotel lobby and include a small cafe. The commission has also voted for a landmarking study of the house. The commission meets at City Hall, 795 Massachusetts Ave., Central Square.
Indigenous Peopleโs Day
City of Cambridge, Monday. In observance of the holiday, municipal offices, libraries and senior centers are closed and payments arenโt required at parking meters or parking meter pay stations. The gates of Cambridge Cemetery, 76 Coolidge Ave., West Cambridge, are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., but the office is closed. Curbside collection of trash, recycling, compost and yard waste will be one day behind schedule for the week; street cleaning for the day was done Sept. 29.
City Council election forum
City Council candidates forum, 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. The Porter Square Neighbors Association, Baldwin Neighborhood Council and Association of Cambridge Neighborhoods host council candidates divided among three panels to make brief statements and take questions, which can be submitted by visiting bit.ly/forumquestions2025. In the second-floor amphitheater at University Hall, 1815 Massachusetts Ave., Porter Square, Cambridge.
Gold Star Mothers park update
Community meeting, 6 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 16. In anticipation of renovations, the city did environmental testing of soil beneath the former basketball court and found contamination; follow-up tests confirm that similar contaminants are in areas throughout the park. This meeting reviews soil test results and discusses next steps. Representatives of the city and Cambridge Department of Public Health will be available to share information and answer questions. School Committee election forum
League of Women Voters of Boston and Cambridge, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 16. A forum for Cambridge School Committee candidates, with light refreshments offered and recording by Cambridge Community Television. At the Cambridge Public Libraryโs Central Square Branch, 45 Pearl St.
