
The Cambridge Rindge and Latin boys’ basketball team (12-2) defeated Westford, 61-57, in double overtime on Friday to extend their winning streak to 11 games.
Against Westford, key stops from the CRLS defense in the final possessions of the fourth quarter and first overtime kept the Falcons in the game. Imam Firmin Jr. hit a series of clutch free throws down the stretch in the second overtime to secure the victory. He led Cambridge in scoring with 19 points and also led in rebounding with five. Mustafa Nur scored 14 points, and Aaron Abebe added 11.
On Tuesday, February 3, the Falcons beat Weston, 64-59 behind Itamar Fox’s 16 points. Nur scored 14 points and pulled down four rebounds. Kabir Varanasi and Jahari Toure Ortiz also each grabbed four rebounds.
Girls’ basketball: The girls’ basketball team (6-10) split its games last week, defeating Weston on February 3, 42-26, and losing to Westford on Friday, 54-42. Against Weston, Nada Elfathy led the Falcons with 14 points, eight rebounds, three steals, and three assists. Jaida Hope chipped in eight points, three rebounds, four assists, and two steals. In the loss to Westford, Jenn Duverglas led in scoring with 16 points. Christina Louverture had ten points, four rebounds, and three steals.
Girls’ swimming: In the MIAA North Sectional Swimming and Diving Championship on Friday, the girls’ swimming team finished in ninth place among 23 teams. Concord-Carlisle won the meet. Bess Sterman finished fifth in both the 200-yard freestyle (2:02.56) and 500-yard freestyle (5:22.34). Laura Park finished fifth in the 100-yard background (1:01.92) and seventh in the 100-yard butterfly (1:03.66). The 4×100-yard freestyle relay team of Sterman, Bianca Etkin, Lila Nguyen, and Park finished seventh with a time of 3:54.93.
Boys’ swimming: The boys’ swimming team finished 20th among 30 teams at its North Sectional meet on Sunday. St. John’s Prep won the meet. Hong-Joon Koh finished 12th in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.85. The 4×50-yard freestyle relay team of Koh, Khantushig Lkhagvajargal, Giacomo Zambotti, and Evan Wei finished 13th with a time of 1:35.04.
Boys’ track: At the Dual County League Indoor Track and Field Championship on February 4, the boys’ track team finished fifth among six teams in the Thorpe Division, with Concord-Carlisle winning the meet. In the 1,000-meter run, Liam Eldridge finished in second place with a time of 2:34.53, and Thomas Dewitt took second in the two-mile run (9:43.42). The 4×200-meter relay team of Matthew Shokoti, Winslow Lively, Joshua Silber, and Miel Henry finished in second place (1:33.29). In the long jump, Laurent Valentin finished third with a jump of 20′ 2½”.
Girls’ track: The girls’ track team finished last among six teams in the Thorpe Division, with Westford winning the meet. Naomi Baldwin took third in the 300-meter dash with a time of 42.65. Also placing third was the 4×400-meter relay team of Baldwin, Neva Hartman, Mariye Demissie, and Sophia Juanes Seto, finisihing in 4:15.88. Seto finished fourth in the one-mile run (5:11.16), and Hartman took fourth in the 600-meter run (1:39.68).
Girls’ hockey: The girls’ hockey team (2-14) won its second game of the season with a 2-1 defeat of Concord-Carlisle on Saturday. The first score came from Kat Levin — her first goal of the season — assisted by Surina Phelan and Caroline Rapp. Emmy Marsh-Zinser scored the game-winning goal in the third period, assisted by Phelan and Marin Albrecht. Max Cowen-Breen made 23 saves.
Boys’ hockey: The CRLS boys’ hockey team (6-10-1) lost to Methuen, 8-0, on February 4 and lost to Lowell, 8-2, on Saturday. In the loss to Methuen, Owen Goldstein made 29 saves, and Isaac Winter-Barkai made seven saves in the third period. Against Lowell, Henrik Emerton had a goal and an assist. Joel Perez scored the other goal, Tate Schoenau had two assists, and Josh Pite added one assist. Goldstein made 29 saves.
