Somerville celebrated one of its teachers on Monday for being among the best in Massachusetts.
Beatriz Thomas, a history and social studies teacher at Somerville High School, was named a finalist for the 2026 Massachusetts Teacher of the Year last fall. The award is organized by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
This week, students, school officials and local leaders gathered at the school to mark her achievement, including a $5,000 award to Somerville High from Wellpoint, a health benefits company that sponsors the award. Wellpoint made similar awards to the two other finalists, and gave a $10,000 award to 2026 Teacher of the Year Tara Goodhue, head of the science department at Lowell High School.
Thomas is a graduate of Somerville High. She said she will use the grant to help students adjust as they shift from 8th grade to 9th grade.
