Cambridge’s Mayor’s Cup baseball tournament was held last weekend at Glacken Field, with participants from the four Cambridge youth baseball leagues (West, North, East and Central) vying for the right to call themselves city champions. After a hard-fought weekend of baseball, the West Division swept both the Minor and Major division championships, with both defeating teams from North Cambridge in the finals on Sunday.
The West Division Minor Cubs capped a perfect season with a blowout 23-2 victory against the Central Division Pirates on Saturday, and an 8-1 victory in the final on Sunday against the North Cambridge Cubs. Coen Dewan, Rex Alexandrov, Memphis Michels and Adam Elsner combined to allow just three runs over the course of the weekend while also chipping in offensively. The West Cubs also got key offensive contributions from Felix Furman, Rory Chung and Aya Uysal.
The North Division Minor Cubs advanced to the final after defeating the East Division Brewers 18-4 on Saturday. They received outstanding performances from Henry FitzGerald and Diego Boliver, who combined to score 8 runs in the first game for the North Cubs in addition to pitching the entirety of the game.
In the Major Division, pitching was the strength of the West Division Orioles, who did not allow a run throughout the entire weekend, defeating the Central Division Major Tigers 10-0 on Saturday and winning a hard-fought 4-0 championship game on Sunday against the North Major Division Cubs. Dylan Flynn threw a complete game shutout with 13 strikeouts in the final, and Trip Donohoe electrified the crowd with an inside-the-park home run in the fourth inning. Nico LaRosa and Trip Donohoe combined for the shutout on the mound for the West Orioles in the semifinal game.
The North Division Major Cubs advanced to the final after defeating the East Division Major Cubs on Saturday, 6-0. Kiyan Mehta got the game going with a bang on Saturday, hitting a leadoff home run to get North started. Mehta also pitched five strong innings in a tough-luck loss in the final.
