Q&A
Compiled by Matt Rocha
Winters writes the Cambridge Civic Journal and Cambridge Candidate Pages, in which he documents civic life in the city. He is a mathematics lecturer at Harvard Extension School and previously taught at MIT. In the 1980s, he helped organize the cityโs first recycling program.
Housing: โI was on the Envision Cambridge Advisory Committee and the Envision Cambridge Working Housing Group, from which, it is said, the Affordable Housing Overlay was generated. I was opposed to it then, and Iโm opposed to the current revisions โฆ The proper way to have done this, which I said back at the Housing Working Group, was to have done this more as a special-permit process just like we do in Central Square.โ
Climate policy: โAs a goal, I agree with most of the timelines. The only difference Iโve really had with the people who are voting on this is that Iโm much more of a fan of incentives and encouragement and education than I am for hardcore mandates.โ
Road infrastructure: โI would not sign the bike safety pledge only because I donโt think every single thing that has been rolled out as a part of the Cycling Safety Ordinance has been done particularly well โฆ I think all of these implementations should be subject to some review.โ
Pet project: As a councillor, Winterโs top priority would be the cityโs charter review process.
