The race for the 2nd Middlesex District state Senate seat may soon have another entrant: Cambridge Vice Mayor Burhan Azeem told Cambridge Day on Friday he’s “fairly certain” he’ll enter the race.
If Azeem were to announce, it would likely be two to three weeks from now, he told Cambridge Day. He said he has booked the Somerville Armory for an event on February 25 at 6 p.m., he said, although it may not turn out to be campaign-related.
Azeem was elected Vice Mayor of the Cambridge City Council earlier this month. Azeem was first elected to the City Council in 2021. Then 24, Azeem was at the time the youngest councillor in Cambridge history (Ayah al-Zubi, who was elected to the Council in November, is just a few months younger than Azeem was when first elected).
He would join a crowded field of players seeking to replace Patricia Jehlen, who is retiring at the end of her term. State Representative Christine Barber announced a run earlier this week, adding to December announcements by Somerville City Councilor Matt McLaughlin and Winchester entrepreneur Tom Hopcroft.
State Representative Erika Uyterhoeven and Cambridge resident Neheet Trivedi are also considering runs for the seat.
To be on the ballot, each entrant will need to pull nomination papers, secure 300 signatures from members of the district, and submit them for certification by April 28. Candidates will be able to obtain their nomination papers by February 10.

So committed to the City of Cambridge that he’s jumping ship to run for Senate immediately after being elected Vice Mayor.
Luckily for us he isn’t our only option.
Our city needs more honest city council members and fewer radicals. Azeem cannot leave the Cambridge city council soon enough.
