It has been pointed out many times that there is no single silver bullet which will solve the global climate crisis. After all, climate change and its impacts weren’t the result of a single cause, but of multiple overlapping and intersecting factors, many of which reinforce and complicate one another in unpredictable and sometimes dangerous ways.
What we need more than anything is comprehensive engagement with the problem at all levels of society, with politicians, the news media, the business community, scientists, artists, activists, and ordinary citizens all involved. The work is daunting, for we need to prepare for the coming storms, mitigate the damage already done, transform our energy economy away from fossil fuels, reduce the corruption and greed that foster and preserve systemic inequity, and reform the media so that climate issues are addressed seriously without false equivalence.
As environmental activist Bill McKibben notes, “to solve everything, we need everyone.” From this perspective, the announcement that climate tech groups in Somerville and Cambridge will be receiving seed money from the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center is welcome news. These entrepreneurs won’t end the climate emergency by themselves, but they’ll be an essential part of the work over the coming decades.
