Federal Judge William G. Young today scheduled a trial date for Joshua Wairi, 27, the Cambridge Public Schools teacher charged with transportation of child pornography.

The court is scheduled to impanel a jury April 6 and the trial should start the next day. The judge hopes Wairi’s lawyers and the government will come to a settlement before then, he said.

Wairi is represented by attorney Benjamin Urbelis and famed criminal defense attorney J. W. Carney Jr. Carney represented James “Whitey” Bulger in his prominent trial last summer.

Wairi is being held without bail at the Wyatt Detention Facility in Central Falls, R.I.

Officials say he admitted to secretly videotaping and using a camera on his phone to record children changing in a school locker room, although Cambridge Superintendent Jeffrey Young has said he is not aware of an allegation that this took place at Graham & Parks. Wairi’s previous teaching job was in Somerville at the Arthur D. Healey School, which is attended by students from kindergarten to the eighth grade.
