Dr. Edwin (Ed) Huang, head of the obstetrics and gynecology department at Mount Auburn Hospital, has been named president of the hospital, it was announced Wednesday. Huang had been serving as interim president since Chad Wable left the post in January after a year.

Huang joined Mount Auburn as chair of obstetrics and gynecology in 2012. He is also an assistant professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive biology at Harvard University Medical School and an adjunct professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Boston University School of Medicine.

Before joining Mount Auburn, Huang practiced and taught at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was associate director of the integrated Brigham and Women’s/Massachusetts General Hospital Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program.

He received an undergraduate degree from Duke University and a medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine. He completed his residency training at Tufts-affiliated hospitals and taught at Tufts afterward, receiving many teaching awards, according to a press release from Mount Auburn announcing his appointment as hospital president.

“I am honored and grateful for this opportunity to serve my colleagues, patients and the community of Cambridge and surrounding towns,” Huang said in a statement. “I have said many times that Mount Auburn Hospital is a special place, and it truly is. With my colleagues’ support, I hope to continue our legacy of compassionate health care and our dedicated mission of training the next generation of physicians. I hope to ensure that all patients seeking care at Mount Auburn will experience world-class care with a personal touch from our exceptional caregivers.”

Huang received praise from Ken Barron, chair of the Mount Auburn board of trustees, and Michael Rowan, executive vice president of hospital and ambulatory services of Beth Israel Lahey Health. Mount Auburn is part of Beth Israel Lahey Health. They lauded his experience, leadership and his commitment and compassion for patients.

Huang is a trustee of Mount Auburn Hospital and of the Mount Auburn Cambridge Independent Practice Association, the doctors who practice at the hospital.
