The Five Spice Crackle Cookie at Elmendorf. (Photo: Madeleine Aitken)

Price: $2.75

Elmendorf is a cooking supply store in East Cambridge that mills its own grain onsite (!) and includes a café. A café inside a store isn’t rocket science – think Cafe Zing in Porter Square Books – but a café by the owners of a baking supply store is bound to be extra good. And it is. Along with $13 sandwiches such as an Eggplant Banh Mi, Peruvian Chicken and Turkey with Tahini Slaw, Elmendorf serves up a menu of pastries both classic and funky and a Five Spice Crackle Cookie that’s special: It’s crinkly on top, true to its name, and chewy in the center, a molasses cookie with a kick. The cloves and cinnamon (two out of five spices) deliver the familiarly warm, wintry flavor of that classic, but the addition of star anise, Sichuan peppercorns and fennel seeds make it a unique bite.
