A special meeting Tuesday finished up business from last week’s School Committee inaugural, swearing in two members unable to attend Jan. 1 and electing a vice chair.

The vice chair will be Caroline Hunter, now serving her second term on the committee after replacing Akriti Bhambi, who resigned midterm, in late 2022.

Hunter was nominated by last term’s vice chair, Rachel Weinstein.

“She hit the ground running. She has 34 years of being an administrator in this high school and raised her daughter through the Cambridge Public Schools. She cares deeply about our young people and about justice. All of our current and previous colleagues will recognize that she knows how important it is to build relationships as a body,” Weinstein said of Hunter. “If she is willing to accept the nomination, and if the committee approves it, I would be beyond delighted to pass the gavel to her.”

Committee member David Weinstein (no relation) seconded the motion, which was then voted unanimously.

Hunter accepted the role. “I intend to serve it with honor. I’m quite honored to be nominated,” she said, thanking Rachel Weinstein for the nod.

Returning member Jose Luis Rojas Villarreal was sworn in for the upcoming two-year term with Hunter.

The first regular meeting of the School Committee is next week, at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
