The tostada at Orale. (Photo: Madeleine Aitken)

Price: $7.50

Just across from the Valente Branch of the Cambridge Public Library is Orale Mexican Grill, a cozy Cambridge Street spot with a menu like a Mexican laundry list. Amid tacos, burritos and quesadillas, I went for the tostada. Itโ€™s a deep-fried corn tortilla that comes topped with refried beans, pico de gallo, guacamole, sour cream and a light sprinkle of cotija, a hard cheese. The tortilla was hot and crispy, serving as a good base for the toppings. The guacamole was bright and fresh, and with a generous scoop, it was the highlight of the bite. The refried beans were also very good, but with a thin spread, they left me feeling a bit shorted (and hungry). Overall, I thought the flavors worked well together โ€“ with more refried beans, this wouldโ€™ve been close to perfect. Itโ€™s definitely an enjoyable snack, but not a particularly hearty one, especially for the price.
