After years on the farmers market circuit, including appearances at Davis Square and Central Square farmers markets, Mahalab Bakery has found its permanent home on Massachusetts Avenue. It opened last month with a menu inspired by owner Ayham Haddadโ€™s native Jordan, the main attraction being the fatayers, which are like savory pockets of dough with various fillings. Thereโ€™s kale and onion, spinach and feta, and acorn squash, ricotta and sage, to name a few. I chose the three-cheese-and-chive fatayer, and although the price felt a little steep for what I got, it was a delicious bite. The cheese was soft and rich, the chives were plentiful and worked to add a nice punchiness, and the bready pastry had a satisfying chewiness that I found to be almost reminiscent of pizza dough. It was a tasty combination and its handheld nature made it great for an on-the-go snack.
