A “serious” crash involving multiple cars, in which “at least one vehicle flipped over” has closed both sides of Memorial Drive at Vassar Street, police said in a Thursday email.
The crash took place shortly after 4 p.m. near the Hyatt Regency hotel. There were injuries in what was assessed quickly to involve four cars on both sides of the street after a “confirmed rollover,” according to scanner reports. The crash was later downgraded to include two cars.
First responders were called in at 4:18 p.m. for at least one person trapped in a car, but they were extricated by 4:30 p.m., according to scanner reports.
Officers suggested drivers avoid the area if possible while emergency crews respond. A downed tree limb needed removal too. “It is an absolute mess down here,” public safety responders said. “It’s absolute gridlock.”
By 5 p.m., even as fire companies were leaving the accident scene, heavy traffic persisted, they said via social media. Memorial Drive reopened at roughly 6:20 p.m., police said in an email update.
