Van Leeuwen Ice Cream opens Thursday in Harvard Square, offering $1 scoops from noon to 2 p.m. and offering 30 percent scooper discounts to students as part of its opening ceremonies. The first 100 customers will get free Van Leeuwen tote bags, too.

Like with other addictive products, watch out for those samples! A Van Leeuwen shop habit could run you around $7 a scoop.

The company, which also makes pints you probably see at the grocery store, is at 1 Brattle Square in 1,375 square feet at a prime location that has seen long vacancies from departures such as an EMS outdoors shop, Chipotle and Spyce. (The other shops from its expansion to the Bay State are in Chestnut Hill and Bostonโ€™s Seaport.) This store has a kind of dessert twin around the bend in a new Chip City cookie shop.

The Van Leeuwen shop has hours from noon to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and noon to midnight Friday and Saturday.

โ€œWeโ€™re so happy to bring Van Leeuwen to Harvard Square just in time for the cozy fall season. We look forward to becoming a part of this iconic neighborhood and bringing our guests good ice cream made with good ingredients that makes you feel good,โ€ founder Ben Van Leeuwen said in a Monday press release.
