Price: $6.60

I’ve been excited to have some Van Leeuwen since learning it was opening a location in Harvard Square, which was while writing an article about Chip City, its cookie seller neighbor. I’ve had Van Leeuwen in New York (and from the grocery store), and found its ice cream creamy and its flavors creative. It’s not the best time of year for it (merry Christmas!), but I went for it anyway. I had the praline butter cake flavor – sweet cream ice cream with praline and pieces of brown butter cake – and thought it was top-notch. The ice cream had just the right slightly bouncy texture and a rich creaminess, and it was chock full of chopped pecans and pieces of cake. I appreciated how chunky it was, adding flavor to the subtle sweet cream flavor of the ice cream itself. It’s an expensive ice cream, but it’s worth it.
