At the new Black Ruby in Porter Square, the main attractions are the Thai-inspired burgers, sandwiches and pastas. Those are very good, but its small plates are also worthwhile for a bite. The steamed pork dumplings were pretty much perfect. The dumplings were well-steamed; their wrappers retained a slight chew, and the pork mixture was tasty and juicy. The basil lime sauce they came with was thin, almost more of a broth, but I really enjoyed its flavor (lime-forward!), and I felt the sauce’s consistency actually helped the dumplings soak up that flavor. There was also a slaw-style salad under the dumplings with carrots, cabbage and cilantro, which added even more freshness to the bright sauce. Five dumplings for $9 felt like a decent deal, especially because they were sizable and amply stuffed, and Black Ruby has a few other sub-$10 items on its menu too.
