Lunar New Year, which was Wednesday this year, is a time for people to connect with each other through feasts and to wish for a joyful and prosperous year. It also gave Cambridge a day of spectacular, passionate performance and other ways to celebrate the new year together.

The Chinese American Association of Cambridge’s Lunar New Year event held Sunday at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School started with a cultural fair with snacks and drinks such as boba tea provided and tables where companies such as the Russian School of Mathematics could do community outreach. The atmosphere was boisterous as people socialized and got to know each other.

A performances in the school’s Fitzgerald Theatre at 2 p.m. began with a few words from city manager Yi-An Huang, police commissioner Christine Elow, mayor E. Denise Simmons and councillor Sumbul Siddiqui, who talked about how the Lunar New Year connects us all and shared favorite memories from their commemorations of the holiday. The MIT Lion Dance Team excited the audience and set the tone for the rest of the event – displays of dance celebrated in China for thousands of years.

There were captivating solos and orchestral works with traditional Chinese instruments throughout, dances including K-Pop and Egyptian styles and demonstrations of martial arts such as kung-fu and tai chi.
