Harvard Square has lost retail over the years, especially with the recent closing of Anthropologie, but is still a marketplace destination for a variety of shops within walkable distance – shoppable in an afternoon if not a lunch hour – that can come in handy for the upcoming Valentine’s Day. With the recent opening of the Lovestruck romance bookstore (44 Brattle St.) and a collection of bakeries, cafes, florists and chocolatiers, Harvard has an argument to make for being the most romance-coded square in Cambridge and Somerville.
For those who don’t disdain Valentine’s Day, being perceived as having put thought into its celebration can be good for a relationship, whatever level it’s on; here are several businesses around the square that offer stylish and exciting surprises to make a valentine’s heart race (in a good way).

For her

Gap: If you just started dating, consider something practical. Gap just released these classic tote bags for under $50 that are ideal for a woman juggling work, workouts and weekend adventures. It comes in a variety of colors and has matching baseball caps. (15 Brattle St.)
Marine Layer: If you have been dating for a while but still don’t want a gift to be overly romantic – more something she probably really wants but won’t buy for herself – explore Marine Layer loungewear. It’s perfect for cozy nights in or lazy Sunday mornings, and so soft she will love you for spoiling her. (37 Brattle St.)
Mint Julep: We all freaked out when we found out about Anthropologie closing – myself included, because I knew working at the cash register the last week would be absolute chaos – but it turns out Mint Julep has stepped up in recent years as a smaller but smart substitute. I’m talking Mother jeans, Rails tops and just an amazing assortment of flirty tops and dresses for the girly girl in your life. Worst case, a gift card from here is always a safe bet. (43 Brattle St.)

For him

Top Drawer: Not everyone buys gifts for their man, but Valentine’s day is another excuse for those who do. Top Drawer has a few options among its customizable watch bands, agendas and wallets – the kind of gift that they will keep even if you break up – and if the guy appreciates the finer things, take a look at an assortment of pens he’ll love showing off in meetings. Or grab a fancy handkerchief. There’s a big selection. (5 Brattle St.)

For the couple

Forty Winks: Tucked above Black Sheep Bagel Shop, this boutique carries an elegant selection of lingerie from simple black underwear sets to more detailed pieces. My favorite was a sultry red slip dress with delicate white lace detailing by Ginia. A treat to wear and a delight to admire. (56 John F. Kennedy St.)
Good Vibrations: I know I said “for the couple,” but maybe just for yourself? If you have been in a relationship for a while or just love exploring with a partner, Good Vibrations has a lot of playful toys for him, her or both. Shoppers can keep it classic with a variety of, well, stimulating options or go high-tech. There are app-controlled options for couples in a long-distance relationship or who want to have fun outdoors, at a party … wherever, really. (52 John F. Kennedy St.)

Seriously, you list Good Vibrations that can barely keep their doors open but you can’t list Hubba Hubba, who has been a part of Cambridge for almost 50 years?
