Former City Council candidate works on road safety

School Street’s intersection with the Community Path now has a mirror intended to prevent corner collisions, a Reddit post from former City Council candidate Ben Orenstein shows. Orenstein had announced a run for councilor at large in April, but withdrew his candidacy in May. Orenstein had posted in early June describing safety issues at the intersection caused by a misalignment of the crosswalk with the curb that required bikers to round a corner off the path to access the street. Circumventing the corner reduces visibility, which could lead to collisions, Orenstein said.

Council candidate Istvan to host Portico Brewing event

Candidates for local office are looking for ways to connect with potential constituents, and in Somerville that includes a lot of gamers. Councilor at large candidate Scott Istvan holds a “Board Games & Beers & Tacos & TTRPGs” – table-top role-playing games – event at Portico Brewing from noon to 3 p.m. June 28 with free tacos from Taqueria El Barrio. “I want to try to host more interesting events for the community – the kind of events that I would enjoy going to, even if it weren’t a political event,” Istvan said in a June 10 Instagram post.

Critique for Wilson’s mayoral-run sign image

Councilor at large and mayoral candidate Jake Wilson delivered yard signs to supporters this week and posted on Instagram about it Friday. Wilson had advertised the signs via Instagram this week. That drew an appropriately Somerville-feeling criticism of the post (some semiotics, some socialism) on the social media platform Bluesky. Featuring a large home and yard in the background was called “out of touch.” “No one really has a house like that with a huge yard,” said the poster, Eric Schwartz.
