Richard Harding welcomes some well-layered customers to the Green Soul cannabis dispensary April 2 in Central Square.

Though I am out of the office over the next four weeks, I have thoughts to share as usual on facets of Cambridge and Somerville style and fashion – how locals have mastered the subtle science of layering, for instance. It’s not just about staying warm, but about curating texture, tone and mood because these cities dress with intention but, as we have seen, without the pressure of trends. You’ll spot utility jackets paired with vintage Harvard sweatshirts, T-shirts under strappy dresses and scarves tied just so. In the open-air runway of Central Square, bike commuters, bookworms and café dwellers all participate in a collective experiment of comfort meeting cool. The layering isn’t bulky; it’s strategic. Oversized fits and structured raincoats are chosen with care. Neutrals rule the streets, but locals love a surprise detail: mustard socks, a cobalt tote or a plaid cap. The secret? Each item tells a story, so layering is less of a necessity and more a creative expression, a quiet rebellion with only a nod to New England’s ever-changing skies.
