One restaurant “genre” I consider underappreciated is the humble chicken and rice shop. Chicken & Co., just around the corner from Davis Square and replacing Yummy Thai, dedicates itself to serving a variety of Thai chicken preparations. On my most recent visit, my eyes (and cravings) fell upon the Crispy Chicken Skin, a fried dish served with a dipping sauce. The chicken skin had just a thin coating of batter, allowing its natural crispiness and savoriness to shine. Each crunchy bite was shocking in how much chicken flavor spilled over. As I dug deeper into the generous portion, I worried that the greasiness would wear me down, especially on a hot summer day. Yet when I dipped the skin into the tangy and sweet dipping sauce, the gentle balancing of flavors washed the greasiness away. Pair it with a cool drink and that’s a snack that’s hard to beat.
