Can the magic and synergy of a well-practiced improv team materialize in one night? “The Draft League” tests the premise, live and in 90 minutes. Improvisers from across Greater Boston are drafted onto what show producer Lizzie Granata calls “power teams” at The Rockwell, heightening the element of surprise inherent in improv by the newness of the performers to each other. “The Draft League” aims to reach two goals: a skilled and genuinely novel show for performers and audience, and an experience that Granata hopes will foster stronger community among area improvisers. Added to that is a closing set by jazz-folk musician Guy Gottesfeld. “Draft League” improviser and co-producer Deby Xiadani badly wants to break the false binary of audiences as “comedy fans” or “concertgoers” – each of whom “go out of their way to see live performance,” Xiadani said. Granata adds: “Mixed-medium shows are delightful because they invigorate people’s senses and help them feel deep emotions and joy in a multitude of ways.”
“The Draft League” at 9 p.m. Saturday at The Rockwell, 255 Elm St., Davis Square, Somerville. $12 to $17.
