As drag rises in popularity nationally (with requisite thanks to 17 seasons of โRuPaulโs Drag Raceโ), a gap has emerged: Drag queens engender far more love and familiarity in popular culture than drag kings. Drag king and comic Andi van Dyke seeks to tip the scales a bit with Dykefest, a sapphic arts festival highlighting the kings and their contributions to the world of music, visual arts and burlesque. Those seeking comedy specifically should swing by around 7:30 p.m. as van Dyke brings to the stage Chloรฉ Cunha, Shruti Datari, Lizzie Sivitz, Ms. Adventure and Rita Mookerjee. (A free talent show hosted by MT Hart is promising too. And itโs hard to go wrong with drag and burlesque performers such as Gwenitalia, Stabitha Christie and local legend Throb Zombie.) The full dayโs offerings โ and the queer joy sparked for audience members and performers alike โ are available with a day pass.ย
โDykefest: A Sapphic Arts Festivalโ from 4 to 10 p.m. Aug. 16 at Arts at the Armory, 191 Highland Ave., Spring Hill, Somerville. $25 per show or $60 for a day pass.
